DHCP Server & Client Overview and Configuration

DHCP Server & Client Overview and Configuration
DHCP Sever Overview
The Cisco IOS DHCP Server feature could be a full DHCP Server implementation that assigns and manages ip
addresses from such that address pools at intervals the router to DHCP clients. If the Cisco IOS DHCP Server
cannot satisfy a DHCP request from its own information, it will forward the request to at least one or a lot of
secondary DHCP Servers outlined by the network administrator.

DHCP defines a method by that the DHCP Server is aware of the ip subnet during which the DHCP client
resides, associated it will assign an ip address from a pool of valid ip addresses therein subnet.
The DHCP Server identifies that DHCP address pool to use to service a client request as follows:
If the client isn’t directly connected (the giaddr field of the DHCPDISCOVER broadcast message is nonzero),
the DHCP Server matches the DHCPDISCOVER with a DHCP pool that has the subnet that
contains the ip address within the giaddr field.
If the client is directly connected, the DHCP Server matches the DHCPDISCOVER with DHCP pool(s) that
contain the subnet(s) designed on the receiving interface. If the interface has secondary ip addresses, the
subnets related to the secondary ip addresses are examined for potential allocation solely when the
subnet related to the first ip address (on the interface) is exhausted.
The Cisco IOS DHCP Server feature offers some benefits as below points:
Reduced web access prices. Using automatic ip address assignment at every remote web site
considerably reduces web access prices. Static ip addresses are significantly dearer to buy than are
mechanically allotted ip addresses.
Reduced client configuration tasks and prices. Because DHCP is simple to tack, it minimizes operational
overhead and prices related to device configuration tasks and eases readying by untechnical users.
Centralized management. Because the DHCP Server maintains configurations for many subnets, an
administrator solely has to update one, central server once configuration parameters modification.
DHCP Client Overview
The Cisco IOS DHCP client immediately allows you to get an ip address from a DHCP Server automatically
exploitation the DHCP protocol as laid out in RFC 2131. In Cisco IOS unharness 12.2, solely ethernet LAN
interfaces are supported; work is ongoing to support all network interface varieties. The Cisco IOS DHCP client
offers the subsequent benefits:
Reduces time to configure and deploy
Reduces the number of configuration errors
Enables customers to centrally control the IP address assigned to a Cisco IOS router

Enable DHCP client on all three PC to obtain IP address automatically from Router that works as DHCP Server.
